The Key Stage 1 Curriculum
At Cheam Park Farm we teach a curriculum that is exciting, fun and imaginative, introducing children to a wide range of experiences that will extend their understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Visit any of our classrooms and you will find children engaged in thinking, questioning and learning.
All children follow the National Curriculum which means that they spend a good deal of time developing their literacy and numeracy skills. Every child has a daily lesson in these subjects. Science and ICT are also core subjects. There is still plenty of time throughout the week for the other curriculum subjects the children enjoy: History, Art, Design and Technology, RE, Geography, Music, Physical Education (Dance, Gym and Games) and Personal, Social and Health Education.
For each subject, Programmes of Study provide information on what should be taught. Where possible, some of the subjects are incorporated into class topics while others are taught as separate subjects.
A variety of teaching approaches are used. This means that children are sometimes taught as a class, sometimes as a group and sometimes individually. This ensures each child receives a broad and balanced education based on his or her needs.
Home Learning Practice at home really does make a difference and our home learning also allows you find out how your child is doing as well. We find most children love their home learning. It extends and consolidates the work they do at school. We make sure the activities we set are always varied, stimulating and manageable!
A strength of our school is the large number of after school activities that the children can take part in. the clubs we offer include art, computer, tennis and bike club. We also have other after-school clubs run by outside agencies for Year 1 and Year 2 pupils. These include Monkeynastix and Funky Fitness.
A breakfast club (7.45-8.50) and after-school club is also available. Parents must pay for these services.
Exploring the environment near and far is great fun. Throughout the year, children are taken on visits to make the curriculum even more exciting and enjoyable.
These visits are a fantastic opportunity for children to broaden their experiences and consolidate their learning. No child is excluded from a school visit due to costs.
Children love our themed weeks at Cheam Park Farm. We have a Book Week Arts Week, Maths Week, Science Week and many more – even a French Day! These weeks are even more exciting than normal as we invite authors, dancers, and artists into the school to make learning different and fun.
Every child in Year 2 has the opportunity to serve on the School Council. Eleven children meet each week to discuss themes such as playground equipment, healthy lunches, safety in the home and school and how to look after new children.
